Are you considering veneers and crowns to restore your smile? We’re Raleigh Dentists, Dr. David Gover and Dr. Susan Gover, and it’s no secret that much of your personality shows through your smile. And when you don’t smile, you don’t seem to have as much personality. It can even get so far as people around you thinking you are sad or even mad. Restorative dentistry may be the solution, and veneers and crowns are just two of many possible avenues we can use for reconstructing a great smile.
Veneers are simply thin porcelain or composite wafer-like material designed to cover the tooth surface, either for improved aesthetics or to protect a damaged tooth surface. Composite veneers may be built-up directly in the mouth, known as direct placement, whereas porcelain veneers must be fabricated in a dental lab and then bonded to the tooth later.
Crowns are a more robust form of restorative dentistry which involves several steps to completion. Initially an impression of a prepared tooth is made to use as a mold for fabrication at a dental lab. The original tooth is ground or shaped and then the crown or “cap” is bonded in place. The crown alternatively may be installed over a dental implant if no original tooth structure is available for support. Due to its encapsulating design which encircles the entire tooth, a crown is often a solution when a large cavity threatens the health of a tooth or when partial coverage by a veneer or laminate simply will not do the job.
Who is a Good Candidate for Veneers and Crowns?
Veneers are an excellent aesthetic solution for the following problems:
- Stained teeth
- Uneven teeth or teeth that have been ground down over time and are now shortened
- Misshapened teeth or teeth that are too small
- Broken or chipped teeth
- Crooked or crowded teeth
Crowns are also a good choice for aesthetic reasons but are particularly good when more extensive damage is at hand or a more durable alternative to veneers is desired. Such instances may include a cracked tooth or a tooth with a very large cavity that threatens the overall strength and vitality of the tooth. Other uses for crowns include installation over dental implants or teeth involved in root canals as they no longer have vital nerve or blood supply and hence lack the long-term strength to hold up to normal bite forces.
If you are trapped with a smile you don’t like, maybe permanently discolored teeth or cracked or misshapen teeth, Veneers and Crowns can restore a smile and bring back the inner you and possibly break the bonds of low self-esteem forever.
