Hopefully the headline for this post captured your attention and got you to start thinking about your smile and what it means to you.
After all, a smile is a universal language unto itself. Even though there are over 100 spoken languages on this planet, a simple smile speaks them all.
Think about it. Have you ever been in a foreign country or in an area where you don’t speak the language? What works better in that situation, a smile or a frown?
How about your typical workday or interactions with your friends and family. You can probably think of people and situations where the whole attitude of the group can change based on the simple act of smile. Smiles are infectious.
But so is the opposite. If you want to bring everyone down around you, just go around frowning. You’ll soon suck all the energy out of the room. As you go through life, what do you think will get you farther? Which do you want to spread? Maybe you don’t even realize you’re the frowner since you’re just trying to hide your teeth. Facial expressions are contagious and you may be spreading the wrong message without having any idea you’re doing it.
There are behavioral scientists that literally make a living studying smiles. And they’ve discovered that people basically respond in kind to whatever facial expression they encounter. Remember, we already said facial expressions are contagious. As it turns out, facial expressions not only reveal what one is feeling but actually contribute to that feeling. Keep smiling … it will lift your spirits.
But a real smile is hard to fake because the true expression involves more than just the jaw muscles, but the eyes as well. If the eyes are the window to one’s soul, then the smile must reveal their true inner spirit.
Have you lost your smile over the years? All too often we see people who smirk or just purse their lips instead of smiling in order to hide their teeth. Or worse still, when they laugh they cover their mouth with their hand almost unable to enjoy the laughter.
